Great-Grandpa Sheaffer

Sadly, Great-Grandpa Sheaffer passed away yesterday, Ben's grandfather. While it's common for people to over-idolize their loved ones, I am being sincere when I say that Great-Grandpa was truly one of the best people I've ever known. A real Christian in every way, J. Erwin Sheaffer was kind, honest, generous, humble and loving. I am so grateful that he got to come to our house for the babies' first birthday and spend some quality time with his great-grandchildren! At 91, Great-Grandpa still lived alone, driving himself around (close distances, at least!) , going to church every Sunday, volunteering and keeping an active social life. With 6 children, 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, he still remembered Ben and me and the babies, not only on major holidays, but on our anniversary! This past November 8th, we received not only a card, but a hand-written letter; a wonderful treat from Great-Grandpa, for sure.
My favorite thing about Great-Grandpa, though, was his ability to feel blessed about everything. In 91 years, he had lost two wives, and had his share of life's tribulations, but all along, he never lost his faith, and always felt fortunate to be alive, healthy and living with a loving family around him. Truly, an inspiration to anyone who met him.
Thank you, Great-Grandpa, for sharing so much with us! You will be missed.

  2. He felt so blessed and thankful to have been able to attend Aimee & Ben's wedding five years ago and tears came to his eyes when he expressed his thrill of being able to share in the celebration of Oliver & Violet's one-year bithday last June. A&B and O&V are the ones that have been blessed - their lives have been touched by a wonderful man!
